The brutal throat-slashing murder of Crawford Academy's football coach has the city on edge. The fact that his body was found in the gay section of Jefferson Park has created more than a few whispers about the macho coach. Everything points to the coach, his sex life, his players, and maybe to the coach leading the team into a different arena. Duffy is not so sure. Add in a new love affair with TJ Dunn (from Getting Dunn), a concussion that might drive Duff out of the boxing game, and the daily challenges of Al the basset hound and you have the fastest paced, most complex and culturally challenging Duffy mystery yet.

Tom Schreck is an author who has a unique flair for winding a mystery novel into a story line with a boxing background that captures the genuine feelings of a journeyman boxer. Like Tom, my background includes some boxing and I relate much more to the club fighter level than to a championship caliber boxer. Tom takes you into the heart and mind of a journeyman in a very real setting and he includes real and legitimate situational boxing strategy. He includes a sarcastic and irreverent line of humor, is slightly chauvanistic in the "all men are pigs" line and his character, Duffy Dombrowski not only has an extremely cool ethnic background (guess who else's last name ends in "ski"?) but Duffy is a flawed human being who takes the occasional drink, makes mistakes and yet always tries to do what he sees as the right thing. As such, Duffy is a very real person and is easy to relate to. The only thing that I don't get is how/why Tom (enthusiactically) and therefore Duffy (reluctantly) are so enamoured with Basket Hounds or Baskerville Hounds or whatever that drooling, flatulent creature is. You'd think that he'd have the good sense to love a breed like the Great Pyrenees instead...Product details

Another great read from Tom Schreck. Always feel like I am a part of the story.
I could not put down this book. This book held my attention from the beginning to the end. I will be reading more of this author's books.
Mr. Schreck has another KO story here. Duffy Dumbrowski, a southpaw boxer and empathetic social worker, leads with his heart as he unravels the twisted lives that would rather kill than face the light of day.
if you love a mystery boxing and basset hounds you can't go wrong with this writer. He has the life of a basset down to a very funny science. You will love this book.
Tom Schreck had nailed it again. I have never read a mystery novel and laughed so hard. He is my new favorite author. Keep writing, Tom, and faster...I'm running out of your books to read.
My sister recommended this book to me, it's the first book I've read by Tom Schreck. What caught my attention right away was his unique writing style. All of his characters come off in a very human way and that was enjoyable.
The story itself took a little longer than I expected to draw me in. It's kind of a slow starter, but I am so pleased that I saw it through. In the end it is a wild roller coaster of a story and I couldn't put it down. Definitely a great read!
Fast paced, intriguing, exciting and lots of fun in this one. Well woven plot and exciting to read. I stayed up WAY TO LATE a couple nights reading this one because I couldn't wait to see what was coming up next. While the ending was sort of forecast a little earlier in the book, it still was surprising in its complexity. I particularly enjoyed him bringing Jack Daniels, from J. A, Konrath's Jack Daniels mysteries, into the narrative for a few scenes. Looking forward to reading more from Tom. I feel he has great promise for future work.
